This is a school which is not supported by funds appropriated by the General Assembly of North Carolina, by the federal government or through local governmental sources.

This is a school supported by public funds appropriated by the General Assembly of North Carolina, by the federal government and through local governmental sources.

 

DOES ENVIRONMENTAL HEALTH PERMIT SCHOOL BUILDINGS?

 

No, Environmental Health only conducts sanitation inspections.  Public Schools are regulated by North Carolina Department of Public Education and Private or Religious Schools are regulated by North Carolina Department of Administration Division of Non-Public Education.

 

HOW OFTEN ARE SCHOOL BUILDINGS INSPECTED BY ENVIRONMENTAL HEALTH?

 

Unannounced inspections are conducted at least once between July and June every fiscal year.

 

WHAT DOES AN ENVIRONMENTAL HEALTH SPECIALIST LOOK AT DURING A SANITATION INSPECTION?

 

Environmental Health Specialists look at:

  • cleanliness of floors, walls & ceilings
  • cleanliness of storage spaces and other areas
  • adequacy of lighting
  • cleanliness of ventilation
  • adequacy of water supply
  • solid waste disposal
  • water fountains
  • toilet and lavatory facilities - cleanliness, good repair, properly supplied
  • sewage disposal
  • dressing rooms and showers

 

DO SCHOOL BUILDINGS RECEIVE A GRADE?

 

 

Yes, school buildings receive a grade similar to that of restaurants, but grade cards are not posted in school buildings.  If you would like to know the grade of any school buildings in the county, you may contact our office at (336)342-8180.
